I had a really hard time deciding on the number of stars to give Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. On the one hand, it was compelling and mesmerizing. On the other hand it was horrifying and terrifying. I do know that I talked about it to more people, and in more settings than any book I’ve read in a long time. Was it uplifting and instructive – NO! Did it teach me something I didn’t already know – NO! But… It was a book that I feel like I will remember for a long time, and hold as a cautionary tale as I go through the rest of my life.
John Grisham’s most recent book, The Litigators, was very recognizable as John Grisham. Like many/all of his books it focused on lawyers and the law. His writing is very readable, and, even though I found the plot predictable, it was still engrossing and entertaining. Nice mind candy to start the year off right.

I’m going to the library in a few hours and will look for The Handmaid’s Tale. I read a lot and like books that grab on and won’t let go
