Five things that made me happy today – 1/20/20

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

1. It was 42 deg. and cloudy when I got up. It continued cloudy and damp all day. Now it’s 49 deg. and mostly cloudy. *sigh* Winter in the Pacific Northwest.

2. A friend of a friend posted this on Facebook. “…heroism is neither being perfect, nor doing something spectacular. In fact, it’s just the opposite: it’s regular, flawed human beings, choosing to put others before themselves, even at great cost, even if no one will ever know, even as they realize the walls might be closing in around them.”

3. There was a presentation today about “Ancient Legends – Myths and Legends about Our Earth.” The fellow who talked to us is retired, but worked for years in disaster preparedness and safety. He said 75% of the ancient civilizations had a flood story that had one family saving all the animals on earth in a large boat. He also said we have been able to generally predict earthquakes by looking at the ancient records of occurrences, particularly in Japan. Japan has records of tsunamis going back 4000 years and they reported a tsunami 5 days after the Nisqually earthquake in Seattle. As an amateur geologist, I was fascinated.

All of these people from British Columbia to California have stories and legends about major earthquakes and tsunamis. These occur about every 500 years, and the last was in the early 1700s, so I guess I’m safe.

4. I took the underwear down to the Garden Apartments, and washed it. Then I brought it home to dry. They only have one large washer, so I guess I’ll do a load of regular clothes tomorrow afternoon, and then the final load on Wednesday. Hopefully by next Monday, I’ll have my own washing machine back.

5. In between carrying the wash across campus, and back home, I had a good session with my personal trainer. I was a little snarky about not having my washing machine available, but she let me blow off steam while we worked out. I think being mad makes it easier to work harder on my exercises.

BONUS: I get to have Happy Hour with my tribe at the Gazebo Group this evening.

How about you? What made you happy today?
