Five things that made me happy today – 8/13/22

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful; for beauty is God’s handwriting.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

1. It was 55 deg. In Port Townsend when I got up. There was an impressive cloud bank in the southeast, but it resolved into wispy clouds. The high in Tacoma after we got home, under blue skies, was 75 deg.

2. Bill, Al and I went to the Spruce Goose at the Jefferson County International Airport for breakfast. Bill had Sunrise Scramble – three eggs, bacon, mushrooms, onions, diced potatoes, and cheese with hash browns and toast. Al had a Vegetarian Cheese Omelette with hash browns and toast. I had two eggs scrambled with ham, and hash browns. It came with toast, but I subbed in one of their incredible cinnamon rolls. It was fun sitting on the porch watching the planes, and even three helicopters, land and take off. Best breakfast in Port Townsend!

3. We went back to the motel, finished packing and checked out. Then, Bill and Erika dropped us off at a park in Port Townsend by the waterfront.

We enjoyed sitting in the sunshine, and watching the gulls and crows squabble over dominance. Erika and Bill indulged in a little retail therapy.

4. We got back to Tacoma about 1:00 pm. We got our stuff out of the car, and waved goodbye to Bill and Erika, with many, many thanks for a wonderful birthday trip.

5. We were still too full from breakfast to eat lunch, so I got the clothes unpacked, and everything put away. I found many nice birthday cards in the mail box, and a birthday gift from Al’s sister-in-law.

How about you? What made you happy today?

Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes; The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

1. Beautiful day in Port Townsend when I woke up. 54 deg. Pink streaks on the glasslike surface of the sound. The temperature in Friday Harbor was 72 deg. In Port Townsend when we got back it was in the upper 60s and still sunny.

2. Bill and Erika picked us up to get breakfast and to check in at Puget Sound Express for our all day whale watching tour.

3. We crossed the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and found a grey whale almost immediately. We hung around there watching it breaching and flipping its fluke at us for a while.

4. We got to Friday Harbor for lunch. Erika had a whole crab, I had fried calamari, and Bill had a cheese burger. Al decided to stay on the boat rather than walking up the hill, so we brought a BLT back to him. Bill and I each had an ice cream cone before we went back to the boat. Many, many sail boats were out that we enjoyed seeing.

5. After we left Friday Harbor we cruised around through the San Juan islands, but we never found another whale. We crossed back through pretty rough seas, and just before we arrived back at Port Townsend we saw a submarine with four tenders, a supply trawler, and three or four Coast Guard escorts, all headed out to sea through the strait.

BONUS: It was a wonderful birthday celebration. Also many thanks to Bill for taking these photos. His cameras are much better than my iPhone, as good as my iPhone is.

Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.

Henry David Thoreau

1. Bright, blue morning sky – high 50s. It was over 70 by the time we left Tacoma. High temperature in Port Townsend this afternoon was 70 deg under sunny skies.

2. I got everything packed and stuffed in my side of the suitcase by 11:00. Al got his clothes out and packed shortly thereafter. We did have to bring an additional carry bag for all the wires and plugs.

3. Bill and Erika got to Tacoma before noon and went to Chick-fil-a to get their lunch before stopping by Burger King to get Whoppers for Al and me. Unfortunately, even though he’s officially on vacation, Bill had to sit in the Mall parking lot and take a work call for an hour. Luckily they hadn’t bought the food before that, so at least it was warm by the time they got home with it.

4. We got to Port Townsend in good time with not too much traffic. We checked into our motel and were ready to go to dinner by 5:30. I didn’t do anything except sit in a car all day, but I was hungry by then.

5. We went to a really nice restaurant for dinner. Al and Bill each had French onion soup. I had steamers (sorry, the picture is after I had already eaten all of them.) Al had salmon and halibut cakes with truffle sauce. Bill had a filet mignonette with little potatoes and broccoli (only I got the broccoli). Erika had gnocchi with truffle gravy, and some crab meat sprinkled on top. Excellent choice for supper.
