Five things that made me happy today – 12/24/21

Whatever is dear to you this season, may you find fullness and hope; and at least some measure of joy.

1. It was 37 deg. and drizzly at dawn this morning. I was ripped from slumber about 2:00 am with wind and rain beating on the window, but that seems to have gone away. We had 40 deg. through the afternoon, and the temperature isn’t supposed to start dropping until after nightfall tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

2. The Central Washington Watters had Christmas today, because the granddaughter from Birmingham has to fly back on Sunday morning, so they are driving over to Spokane tomorrow. I hope the cancellation bug doesn’t hit them on Sunday after they make the trek across the state.

3. We had the leftover Chicken Noodle Soup of the Week. I needed to clear out some space in the refrigerator because of all the goodies for our charcuterie board tomorrow. I spent a while this afternoon making German cucumber salad and I also cut up the crudités for tomorrow’s cold snacks.

4. The last of the mail orders came today. I think we’re ready.

5. I’m going to watch the church’s pre-recorded children’s Christmas Eve Service when it airs later this afternoon. I’m so glad we don’t have to go out to enjoy it.

How about you? What made you happy today?

If we stop long enough to gaze at what is laid out before us, to let the mystery of beauty and the wonder of the seasons sit deeply in our soul, our hearts cannot help but burst forth in thanksgiving and gratitude to life itself.

1. It was 40 deg. when I woke up this morning with drizzle. It stopped raining and the sun came out by breakfast. The temperature managed to get up to 45 while the sun was out, but it clouded up and started drizzling about 2:00 p.m.

2. With the sunshine, I went over to the Wellness Center and spent an hour on the recumbent cross trainer (still too cold to walk outside). HCR’s talk today was philosophical, but based on history. She said she’s tired of the population of the country being bifurcated into Democrats and Republicans. She wants to return to the PRINCIPLES of the founding fathers (in the Declaration of Independence) and start a movement based on that. Not “my country always right” or “my country is always wrong”, But we are TRYING to believe that all human beings are created equal, that we live under the rule of law, and that we all have a right to help decide what those laws should be. We might not always get our way, but we have a right to peacefully express what we want. If she can start a movement based on those principles – sign me up!

3. Lunch today was bratwurst and sauerkraut with boiled potatoes. Al would eat sausage of some kind every day of the world if I’d let him, so he seemed pleased.

4. I see there’s a new season of the Matrix out now. I’m either too old or too literal to enjoy futuristic films. Likewise I’m not a fan of any of the Superhero genre. Big Al and one of my sons are big Star Wars/Star Trek fans, but I lost interest after the third Star Wars movie. I thought Star Trek was fine when it was a TV show, but all of the spinoffs from that eventually bored me.

5. On the other hand, I loved The Lord of the Rings both the books and the movies. I was less than impressed with the movie versions of The Hobbit. I thought they stretched the movie version out just for the sake of putting something on the screen.

Five things that made me happy today – 12/15/21

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.

1. It was in the upper 30s with light rain first thing this morning. The rain started in earnest about noon, and it never got much above 39 deg all day.

2. I had my annual eye exam today. I’ve had this appointment for three+ months, but when I got here they couldn’t find any record of it. They worked me in, but all my rushing around this morning was for naught. If there are typos in this blog, blame it on my eyes being dialated.

3. I’ve been noticing that I’ve had trouble driving at night because the lights of cars coming towards me effectively blinded me. So I gave up and scheduled an appointment to get my cataracts removed towards the end of February.

4. We stopped on the way home from the optometrist’s office and picked up Pho for me. Big Al preferred to fix ramen noodles for himself for lunch.

5. While I worked out at the Wellness Center, I listened to HCR’s interview with Rebecca Solnit (because I didn’t have to see anything). Rebecca has just published Orwell’s Roses and they were talking about the book. There were lots of interesting points, but what stood out to me was how different Orwell was from his novel 1984. The interview is worth a listen (on HCR’s Facebook page).
