Five things that made me happy today – 12/23/22

If we stop long enough to gaze at what is laid out before us, to let the mystery of beauty and the wonder of the seasons sit deeply in our soul, our hearts cannot help but burst forth in thanksgiving and gratitude to life itself.

1. It was 20 deg when I woke up this morning with lots of ice. Again I was happy to be safely in the warm, dry hospital. By the time I was ready to go home it was starting to thaw. By sunset it had warmed up to 38 and the icy streets were running like rivers.

2. I actually had breakfast this morning, but it was a little sparse because most of the cooks hadn’t made it in. My breakfast was scrambled eggs, and orange juice. They also gave me a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee (neither of which I eat/drink). They couldn’t help it and did the best they could with no staff.

3. I spent the morning watching junk TV, and napping. Lunch wasn’t much better than breakfast, but I did get turkey, and mashed potatoes. I also had a little package of sliced apples.

4. I spent most of the time until 2:00, getting my discharge orders, and prescriptions for after I got home. One of our friends at FTJ offered to drive Al down to pick me up. They arrived shortly after 2:30, and I got one of the guys from my floor to find a wheelchair to take me down. We got home around 3:30.

5. Now I’m sitting under a cover in front of the fire watching football and Al is fixing me a bowl of cereal, and a cup of tea.

How about you? What made you happy today?

1. It was 33 deg and clear first thing this morning. Even though the sun was out all day, the high was only 43 deg.

2. I went over to the Wellness Center about 11:00 and worked out on the NuStep. I figured I’d better do that because I never did get over there yesterday.

3. We had Burger King hamburgers for lunch. Extra pickles on Al’s, extra onion on mine.

4. The deer family has been enjoying the sunshine in my backyard all of the day. They’re probably resting up for Santa’s call next week.

5. They had the Independent Living Holiday Party today. It was very nice, and the decorations were spectacular. The menu was special as well.

Stuffed Mushrooms

Spanikopita

Warm crab and artichoke dip

Cold sliced meat platters

British Cheese Sampler Platter

Rolls

Assorted Dessert Bars

I’m glad we didn’t eat much for lunch and that we had it early.

How about you? What made you happy today?

Only when conventional hope disappears are the desperate moved to daring action.

1. It was in the mid 30s when I got up, and the drizzle had returned. Yesterday’s sun was nice. The drizzle turned over to full-blown snow after breakfast, but the temperature stayed between 35 deg and 37 deg. Because it was snowing so hard, we ended up with about half an inch on the ground. It is melting now.

2. I was really happy that I could attend church on line this morning, wrapped up in a blanket in my recliner. I didn’t relish going out in the snow. The sermon was from the Isaiah passage we talked about in Bible study this week.

3. The maintenance men who have been promising Al they would come help put the outdoor Christmas lights up, took advantage of the weather and put it off for another day.

4. We had planned to go to our favorite hibachi restaurant for lunch. We waited until 2:00 pm and the snow was still coming down, so we decided to skip it, and I pulled a PF Chang’s frozen meal (Chicken Fried Rice) out of the freezer and fixed that.

5. The bowl schedule is out and I have spent a couple of happy hours populating my calendar, so I don’t miss anything.

How about you? What made you happy today?
